Menswear Memo

  • Menswear designer can’t afford his own clothes

Designer Michael Bastain discussed the state of men’s fashion with the New York Times, including the outrageous prices of high-end labels, including his own.  “It’s crazy, I can’t even afford my clothes.”  Bastain also slammed the feminization of men’s clothes.

“It’s getting kind of ridiculous,” Michael Bastian said, sitting in his small Greenwich Village apartment. “Every time you turn a corner, there’s a guy wearing skinny jeans, an ironic cap, a low V-neck tee, vintagey high-tops and a scarf. It’s the equivalent of the ‘Sex and the City’ look that was such a thing for women a few years ago.”

Amen, Michael!  Guys, time to get back to dressed like men.

  • Save the Earth while sporting extravagant luxury!

Feel like doing your part for the environment, but don’t want to eschew the finer things in life?  Well guys, luxury giant PPR has you covered!  The owner YSL is selling an organic cotton shirts for a mere $225 that will benefit an eco-charity.

  • Menswear moving on up at Macy’s

Macy’s is betting that men are will continue to go against the recession grain by spending their disposal income on clothes.  Their in-house label, INC, is rolling out a fall collection in September that looks to cash in.  Don’t expect high fashion, though.  This is Macy’s we’re talking about.  The Cut’s preview of the coats include that err a bit on the discount super-store looking side, but there are some decent options, especially considering nothing retails for over $200.
